Still Life with Lobster and Fruit
Zoom

A Baroque still life with a sumptuous, almost theatrical table setting: against a dark background, beneath heavy red drapery, are arranged a lobster, fish, oysters, fruit, grapes, a pumpkin, a lemon, silverware, and a painted jug. The composition is built on the contrast of precious textures — cool metal, smooth ceramics, moist shells, the matte skins of fruit, and the scarlet carapace of the lobster, which becomes the principal chromatic accent.

Soft light draws the objects out of the penumbra, emphasizing their material presence and abundance. At the same time, the painting conveys a distinct vanitas motif: the beauty of the feast is fleeting, the food perishable, and the solemn drapery lends these everyday objects the quality of a staged scene, in which luxury already contains a premonition of decay. Chemical and technological analysis confirms that the painting dates to the seventeenth century.
