In the clock tower of the Iveron Mother of God Chapel in Moscow, near the Resurrection Gates of Kitay-gorod, an ancient icon – a copy of the Athos shrine – was kept in the 19th century.

The Discovery of the Our Lady of Iviron Icon

It was miraculous, significant for Moscow’s culture and for the city’s Orthodox faithful. Now it is considered lost. Arbat Fine Art Gallery found a copy of this icon, painted in 1861 by icon painter Ivan Malyshev at the Holy Trinity – St. Sergius Lavra, and blessed at the relics of Sergius of Radonezh. This icon served as a substitute for the original while it was carried in procession around Moscow to heal people.

We restored the icon, researched its history, attributed it, and returned it to the Church. Thanks to patrons, the icon is now housed in the clock tower on the central square of Belgorod. The gift was made to the Diocese of Belgorod with support from local entrepreneurs.

In the early years of Soviet rule, the icon was taken to a firewood storage facility. It was kept by believers, and some 80 years later it was bought by Arbat Fine Art Gallery from their descendants.
