After the restoration of the Greek icon of Kardiotissa, we discovered beneath the layers of overpainting a masterpiece of the highest caliber. We identified this work as the creation of the renowned Cretan master Andreas Ritzos.

This famous artist once inherited an archive containing samples from the great Byzantine master Angelos Akotantos. Among the drawings in this archive, there was apparently a sketch of the rare image of Our Lady of Kardiotissa. The original Byzantine icon, painted by Akotantos, is now housed in a museum in Athens. Andreas Ritzos created a replica of this icon, which eventually came into our possession.
