In early 2016, a painting attributed to Vittore Carpaccio was sold at Sotheby’s in New York. We bought it at a modest price because it looked unattractive due to poor restoration. We recognized its potential and proceeded to clean the painting.
During the cleaning process, the signature “Vittore Scarpazo” was found – partially lost, but located within the artist’s paint layer.
The painting turned out to be an early work by the great master – a major discovery. We would like to thank Professor Peter Hamfrey for his detailed study and for publishing his findings on the painting.
